Snow season is here, and keeping our sidewalks, crosswalks, and public spaces safe is a shared responsibility. The Omaha Downtown Improvement District (ODIDA), the City of Omaha, and property owners all play a role in making sure Downtown stays safe and walkable during winter weather.
For Pedestrians
- If you see sidewalks, alleys, or areas not cleared and unsafe, report it to the Mayor’s Hotline:
- Call 402-444-5555 or visit omahotline.com
- Provide exact addresses or use the GPS tool on the website to drop a pin on the problem location
- Call 402-444-5555 or visit omahotline.com
- You can also use the hotline to report graffiti, potholes, and other issues. Save it to your phone’s home screen for quick access!
For Property Owners
- Clear sidewalks promptly—especially along busy streets where pedestrians may otherwise be forced into traffic.
- Push snow away from the street, not back toward it, to prevent plows from reburying your walk.
- Use pet-safe ice melt to protect dogs’ paws.
- Keep hydrants and mailboxes clear—don’t bury them with shoveled or blown snow.
- Be a good neighbor—extend your snow blower a few extra feet, and avoid blowing snow onto a neighbor’s already-cleared walk.
- Prevent ice hazards—use ice melt on stairs and steep walks to avoid thaw/refreeze conditions.
For ODIDA
While the City clears streets and property owners clear sidewalks, ODIDA steps in to help pedestrians by:
- Clearing crosswalks and walkway piles left behind by snowplows
- Targeting high-traffic pedestrian routes for extra attention
- Responding to problem areas reported by the public
