ODID Secures Grant for Utility Box Art Wrap Project

The Omaha Downtown Improvement District Association (ODIDA) is pleased to announce that the Utility Box Art Wrap Project has received generous support from both the Nebraska Arts Council and the Midlands Community Foundation. This funding enables ODIDA to transform traffic cabinets into engaging public art installations throughout Downtown Omaha.

About the Project

Beginning August 2024, eight traffic cabinets located between 17th & 13th Street along Howard Avenue were refurbished as part of a beautification initiative. In collaboration with Omaha by Design, Local Artist, Local Art, and the City of Omaha, local artists wrapped or painted each box—prior designs being approved by the Omaha Public Art Commission.

Artist-painted cabinets quickly enlivened the streetscape, offering residents and visitors a vivid reminder of creativity’s power in everyday urban life. This initiative builds on successful public art strategies seen in the ORBT station project.

Why It Matters

“Art shouldn’t be confined to galleries,” said Holly Barrett, ODIDA Executive Director. “Beautifying infrastructure fosters community engagement and supports local artists—reinforcing a dynamic Downtown Omaha.”
This initiative:

  • Elevates public art visibility
  • Encourages pedestrian curiosity and interaction
  • Enhances community pride and placemaking along Howard Street

Next Steps

ODIDA is exploring expanding the wrap project along 16th Street, with initial planning supported by grant funding. Stations along additional corridors may follow, depending on site assessments and available resources.
